Summer Coursework

Honors English 9 Students:

Please be encouraged to use your summer to prepare yourselves for the coursework for Honors English 9.

As described in the California Area High School Course Description Booklet, “Honors English 9 is a more intensive study of writing, literature, grammar usage, and mechanics. This course is designed for those who are either college-bound or preparing for language-dependent careers. As this course will cover 50 – 60 % more material than Academic English 9, it is recommended only for those students with strong reading abilities and desires.”

Because Honors' students are avid readers, you will enjoy these two selections: The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, and Night, by Elie Weisel.  While reading these selections, be sure to complete the accompanying reading guides to facilitate your comprehension and reflection on the material.  Copies and/or audio versions can be found online, or students may purchase their own copies of the selections.  Additionally, be sure to complete the Eight Parts of Speech grammar packet to prepare you for Honors 9 writing.  This material should be completed by the first day of school.
